Munich

Prost!

Wow. This place is crazy good. I went to check out the grounds yesterday and at an outside seating cafe got myself a breakfast of apfelstrudel and coffee. And I watched the show go by. So much lederhosen and different kinds too. And of course the dirndl´s. So many lovely Frauleins. After I got my fill of people-watching, I walked around the grounds of Oktoberfest and at around 12:30 decided to enter the Hofbraeuhaus for my first litre. Maybe 2. I lost count after 4. I sat at a table with 4 lovely German girls and there was lots of good conversation, singing along with the oompah band (everyone loved it when they sang "Be my, be my little baby, be my baby now...!), and mass drunkenness. The Italians sitting next to us were done by 6. And I had read that the Italians were very touchy-feely with the ladies and I can confirm that yes, they certainly are. That would not fly in the States. For snacks I got a bag of chocolate-covered almonds which I shared with the table. For dinner it was a small roasted chicken. Pretty basic but very good and certainly needed. I think today I´ll get one of those giant pretzels. Also, I woke up in my hotel room this morning with a stein in my bag, courtesy of one of my German friends. Hope it doesn´t break over the next 2 weeks!

As far as pictures go I think those will have to wait until I get to La-Chaux-de-Fonds. This computer is embedded in the table with no port access. Right now I am off to the train station to buy my ticket to Salzburg tomorrow. I´ll get some brunch, walk around, and then it´s to the tents!

Tschau!

2:00 local time:

Just got back from the Lowenbrau tent and sat with a group of German fellows. I only had one litre this time because I wanted to come back, change and then head out again. At the train station today I sort of figured out how to get my ticket to Salzburg: I can buy it tomorrow and trians to Austria depart every hour or so. The only thing I wasn´t sure of was "Means of Transport: IC, ICE-EC, or no ICE-EC. Ooookay. I´ll ask someone at the Hippodrom tent where I am headed next. On the way back from the train station I stopped at a tiny cafe and had Wurstsemmel and MezzoMix for lunch. Wurstsemmel is sliced meat with cucumber, lettuce, cheddar cheese and butter on a kaiser roll. MezzoMix is like Orange Crush but darker. But then I noticed Leberkassemmel: it´s a loaf of pork in a warming...box...and with spicy mustard again on a kaiser roll I was told "it is a very Bavarian sandwich". I got that to go.

Okay, I´m off to the grounds again. Oh, polizei presence is everywhere: certain roads are blocked off, there´s a cruiser at every corner and the polizei walk around the grounds with an Uzi at their side. It´s good to see.

Prost!

2;00 local time...am

brost, al vetisvein, yah and dah....

okay, I warned you and and here it is! alf verizhein! speckenzien dutch or enlansh, mo fo! foo!

Went to the tent and sat with 2 Germans and 4 (don´t call me Austrians) Austrailians who were very lovely. Ah! We went on a fe rides and yeah ater that, not so much in remembrance.....
Okay to finish up Munich, I had a blast with my new friends, Manuel, Kirsten, Mark, Callie, Joan and Rebecca. They got me on a 'swing ride' where 2 seats are together attched to the center pole by chains and you are lifted up and then it swings you around high in the air. Nice. I refused to go on the freefall though. After all this we went back to the tents. Manuel has yet to email me pictures of our time in the tents so hopefully those will come soon!

The Lost Brownie

Hello!
The flights to D.C. and to Munich went without a hitch. I did sleep on the first flight, which was only an hour in the air, and then I could not sleep at all on the overnight. No upgrade either as the plane was completely full. I sat next to Sharon and Todd, a nice couple from San Jose going to Munich for their 30th wedding anniversary. On the other side of me was Gavin, a 5 year old - I was jealous that he could curl up in his seat and sleep. He did kick me a few times inadvertently. Dinner was okay--I had the pasta: baked ziti in a tomato sauce, a dinner roll and a crisp lettuce salad with sesame-ginger dressing. My brownie fell off my tray, landing under Sharon´s seat. Her arms were too short to reach and I didn't have enough room to move like that. I really wanted that brownie.

Well, I´m at my hotel, it´s about 10:30 and I am starving! Time to explore!

The SM Effect

September 24th, 2009

Bonjour!

If you read My Itinerary you noticed a picture of a rather relaxed looking monkey at the bottom of the page. That is Super Monkey. He's been around for a long time now. Adopted originally by my friend Erica from the Mobil-On-The-Run off of West Hollis Street in Nashua, NH., he was playing the banjo outside the gas station, his overturned fedora hat--since lost--collecting very few coins so he could buy his next meal. Erica, being the sweetheart that she is, took pity on the poor thing. Bringing him to 13 Mason St, Super Monkey immediately ran for the bathroom, locking the door behind him. About 45 minutes later, we were able to open the door, only to find him passed out on the floor, the roll of T.P. strewn all over the place and the water in the bathtub running cold. But with a good nights rest and at the next morning a hearty breakfast of eggs, steak, hard tack and strong coffee in his tummy, Super Monkey recovered to tell his story of how he came to be sitting outside a gas station in Southern NH. We'll get into that later. What's important now is that since then, he has become quite the world traveler! He also does social events, if anyone is interested. Check out these photo's and know there will be plenty more as the trip progresses:

My Itinerary

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Okay, here it is:

Sunday, Sept. 27: Leave Manchester, NH. My mom is bringing me to the airport (thanks, mom!), we'll have lunch there and I will be on my way---to a connecting flight to D.C. Then it's D.C. to:

9/28: Munich! But wait, it's an 8 hour flight. Upgrades could be possible. Fryepod Jr. will be fully charged.

9/28: Munich! And a 7:30 am arrival time ! I'll check my bags into the hotel I'm staying at and then explore! I need to get out, take a walk or a bike tour. I heard that Mike's bike tours are the way to go. I'll be in a European city, there's lots of things to see. Until early afternoon. Then it's all business. I will not, on my first visit to Oktoberfest, stand in line. Early afternoon, around 12:01, I'm plopping myself down in one of those tents and getting my first litre of beer. Then a second one. Then I should probably get some food: giant pretzels, pigs knuckles, something! Maybe I'll wander over to the Hippodrome Tent. Is wander the right word?

9/29: Munich: I'm conflicted as to whether I wish my hotel has free internet access or not. How willing am I to potentially write things I might regret, like gibberish? Fmenowant, ha ha hw! (If only we will be so lucky). On the other hand it could be a wild ride for the rest us though, korrekt?

9/30: A short train ride to Salzburg, Austria. I'll probably need to take it easy. Home of Mozart though. Gotta try Mozartkugel, right? Anyway, there's a funicular to the highest point overlooking the city and free concerts for those of us that are beginners with Classical music. I just think that might be a cool thing to do.

P.S. Samantha..call me ;)

10/1: A longer train ride from Salzburg to Switzerland, La Chaux-de-Fonds. About 8 hours. The train also goes through Liechtenstein on its way. I don't know why I'm excited about that, but I am! And this begins the part of my trip when I'll have free lodging as I will be staying with people that I either know or with friends of friends. In Switzerland, I'll be staying with a friends sister and her husband.

Sunday, Oct. 4: Switzerland to Provence, France. Staying in Vaison La Romaine with a family friend, a countess. I found this out recently so there will be plenty to talk about! Also, there is a farmer's market that takes over the town every Tuesday...since 1523!

Wednesday, Oct. 7: Leave Vaison for Paris. Oh boy, Paris. Back to hotels and/or hostels. There is so much to do here but I think I have a plan. I have to climb the Eiffel Tower, walk the Champs de Elysees, picnic, have dinner at a nice restaurant. There is a different side of Paris to see that I have read about: underground. The catacombs sound less stinky than the sewer tour. I'll have to think about that one. Where's a good place to think..hmmm?

Friday, Oct. 9: Paris to Amsterdam. 4 to 5 hour train ride. I thought about spending a night in Brussels but I think a Friday night in Amsterdam would be pretty cool. I booked a hotel room in the Jordaan quarter. My friend Chris is coming after work to spend the night in the city and we'll paint the town red. Well, that might not be the best expression in this case, but you know what I mean. It's the 'Dam! Then for the next night or two or three I'll be staying with Chris, his lovely wife Yvonne and his baby girl, Esmay, who is going to be teaching me words. I also believe I was offered to borrow their second car, a 1988(?) yellow Volvo, named Lilly. From what I gathered, it might get me from point A to point B---"It will be an adventure, right?". Chris, I am definitely taking you up on that offer.

10/13: Amsterdam-Zurich-Boston

This guy is going to have fun:
